Wente’s Riva Ranch Sauvignon Blanc right where it belongs; with the herbs.

There was a great splash of California sunshine in the Wente Vineyards Riva Ranch Sauvignon Blanc.

This wasn’t an austere, grassy Sauvignon Blanc. A beautifully round mouthfeel gave the wine body without relying on biting acidity. Pink grapefruit, papaya, pineapple and citrus flavors filled the glass, joined by hints of honeysuckle and a vibrant minerality that conjured the essence of a spring snowmelt — fresh, clean and almost river-like.

If there’s a sweet spot for Sauvignon Blanc, this is it.

Wente didn’t dip into an overripe tropical fruit cocktail, but also steered well clear of the harsh fresh-cut-grass notes that can overpower the fruit in Sauvignon Blanc. Instead, the Riva Ranch found a beautiful middle ground: ripe and generous, but still fresh and vibrant.

That made it an ideal partner for Greek-style grilled chicken loaded with lemon and freshly chopped herbs.

What made the pairing work wasn’t similarity, but contrast.

With parsley, oregano, thyme and lemon doing the heavy lifting, the chicken already had plenty of bright, green and savory flavors. Pairing it with an aggressively herbal Sauvignon Blanc could have been too much of the same thing.

Instead, the Wente provided a warm embrace.

Its ripe fruit and rounded texture stood in contrast to the fresh green herbs, while the chicken, its seasoning and a little char from the grill did all the savory work. The wine’s citrus and grapefruit kept everything fresh, while those papaya and pineapple notes provided just enough richness to soften the sharper edges of the lemon and herbs.

It was a reminder that a food-and-wine pairing doesn’t always have to chase matching flavors. Sometimes the best partner brings something entirely different to the table.

And as summer begins to slip away, this combination is an ideal way to capture its waning moments: chicken sizzling on the grill, fresh herbs scattered across the cutting board and a cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc catching the last of the summer sunshine.
