The estate vineyard at Jonata in Ballard Canyon, Calif.

Bedraggled by the just completed Holiday Season, too many side hustles to count and an encroaching snow storm, I turned to an old friend.

The 5 o’clock glass of wine.

Not for a tasting note, a story or because it’s a sample that has been sitting there for too long. But because there’s something great about the simplicity of pulling a cork or untwisting a cap at the end of a busy day.

There’s great joy in that moment.

As a wine lover and a fitness guy - as many of you already know I moved into personal training from the world of coaching two years ago - I manage to balance the two passions just fine.

So as the idiocy of ‘Dry January’ drags on, I want to remind everyone that’s quitting one of the world’s great joys: just a sip of wine at the end of a busy day, week or month can let go of the illusion.

Rather, embrace moderation. Let it truly be a glass, or less of wine, which it often is for me and look at the flip side of this nonsensical passing fad.

Imagine for a second that you’ve over trained at the gym orr in your fitness routine. Happens to me all the time. My body aches, I’m extra fatigued and might even feel a cold coming on.

How do I manage that situation?

Just a few rest days where it’s long walks with the dogs or a bike ride. Something less impactful on my muscles, joints and body. It’s not a sudden switch to ‘Fitness Free February.’

That would make as much sense as Dry January. If the moment February 1 rolls around you just start pounding alcoholic beverages then what was the point of January?
