Anaba winemaker Katy Wilson has made wine from over 30 different varieties.

Katy Wilson Brings precision and passion to Anaba’s Turbine Red, an approachable “Rhône-like blend” rooted in Sonoma’s evolving terroir

For Wilson, winemaking is equal parts precision and intuition—a blend of careful site selection, constant adaptation and a deep respect for the people who farm the land. Her approach is reflected in Turbine Red, a fruit-forward, approachable and layered red with subtle complexity.

“I like to find sites that will add to the portfolio,” Wilson said. “We start with vineyard managers I know and find what they have available. A big part is to work with people you know will farm to your standards. First and foremost, we are interested in sites that are organic or sustainable. It’s all about how they do their farming; you can have the most beautiful site, but if it's not farmed right, you won’t have the best fruit from there.”

With the Anaba Sonoma County Turbine Red 2022 ($48), go ahead and embrace the nose of simple red fruit and strap in for an absolute thrill ride. An introduction of strawberry and cherry flavors surrenders to some blueberry notes before there's a nudge from dark fruit, iron ore, tanned leather and the slightest touch of dark chocolate. It's a fascinatingly fun wine that, despite its complexity, seamlessly folds together from one act to the next.
