Washington makes outstanding merlot, Among the Giants puts the Goose Gap AVA on the map.

Andrew Wilson had to take his foot of the proverbial accelarator.

When he arrived at Washington’s Goose Ridge Vineyards in 2014 the intensity of the Merlot caught him off guard. The fruit surprised him with its structure and tannic power.

But, he’s learned the subtle context required to dial back extraction. In doing so he’s coaxed out a softer, more supple expression that’s still juicy with a searing intensity. Which is what makes the Goose Ridge “Among the Giants” Merlot 2021 ($22) a must-buy wine for your next foray to the wine shop.

“The acidic brightness pushes the phenolics and tannis to be more forward,” Wilson said. “It makes the Merlot almost crunchier.”
