A World Tour of Flavor: Whites That Pop, Reds That Linger and a Few Surprises in Between
From Italy to Argentina, this diverse lineup showcases bright whites, bold reds and a sparkling stunner—all worth seeking out.
From the crisp, herbal edge of Sauvignon Blanc in the Italian Alps to the silky, feral side of Alexander Valley Cabernet, this collection spans continents, varietals and styles. It’s a celebration of expression—from toasty Gavi to plush Columbia Valley bubbles. Here’s what caught my palate this week:
Bernardus Chardonnay, 2023 – Monterey County, California ($30)
Bright gold in the glass, this is a hazelnut and butter lover’s dream. Rich and round, yet well-balanced—a classic California Chardonnay profile done right.
Ex Post Facto Pinot Noir, 2024 – Sta. Rita Hills, California ($30)
Aromas of loamy earth, cranberry, and tea leap from the glass. Tart cherry, wild herbs - garrigue - and a whisper of sea salt make this wine a standout—especially at the $30 price point.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon, 2021 – Alexander Valley, California ($60)
Saturated purple in the glass, this Cab channels Alexander Valley’s wild side. Silky smooth tannins, notes of currant, black cherry, and iron finish the experience with elegance and power. A classic with attitude.
Luigi Bosca White Blend, 2023 – Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina ($40)
An intriguing medley of 50% Chardonnay, 35% Semillon, and 15% Sauvignon Blanc. Fresh-cut herbs mingle with pineapple and a hint of toasty oak on the finish. Bold, complex and compelling.
Northstar Merlot, 2022 – Columbia Valley, Washington ($50)
Deep aromas of blackberry compote and dark chocolate lead to a lush mouthfeel with flavors of sweet cherry, blackberry and vanilla. An opulent Merlot with structure and style.
Ram’s Gate Chardonnay, 2021 – Sonoma Coast, California ($48)
An arresting nose of green fruit, moss, jasmine blossom and spring creek essence pulls you in. On the palate, yellow apple, pear and subtle tropical notes play with a flaky brioche bun impression. Complex and downright captivating.
San Leonardo “Vette” Sauvignon Blanc, 2024 – Italy ($25)
A blast of grapefruit jumps from the glass, leading to a layered palate of melon, candied lemon, and a dash of lime zest. There’s enough texture to carry the fruit through before a zippy burst of acidity lifts the finish.
Tenuta LaRocca Gavi (Cortese), 2023 – Italy ($25)
Golden in the glass, with welcoming aromas of toasted nuts and pear. Flavors of honey, green apple and a zesty tropical citrus note make for a refreshing and complex finish.
Tirriddis “Rendition No. 3” Sparkling Wine Blend, N/V – Columbia Valley, Washington ($29)
Thoughtfully crafted in Washington’s Columbia Valley, this sparkler opens with a creamy mousse and mouth-filling first sip. Flavors of warm red apple and ripe pear glide into a long, plush finish. Elegance meets approachability.
Varvaglione “12 e Mezzo” Chardonnay, 2024 – Puglia, Italy ($20)
Steely and bright, with garden herbs and apple blossom on the nose. Flavors of candied apricot and ripe peach give this Southern Italian white a juicy, sun-kissed edge.
